Please read our candle safety tips - many are recommended from the National Candle Association

Candles have been a comforting part of our daily lives since they were first invented hundreds of years ago. They reassure us with their light, enrapture our mood with their ambiance and capture our imaginations with soothing scents. However, consumers should understand and respect basic fire safety and the proper use of candles to ensure candles continue to be an enjoyed aspect of our environment.

National fire safety agencies have determined that nearly 40% of residential candle fires reportedly occurred because candles were unattended, abandoned or inadequately controlled. Nearly 20% occurred because a combustible item was placed to close to the candle.

These statistics point to the need for the consumer to be mindful of four easy to remember and all important candle safety tips.

1.  Always keep a candle burning within sight.

2. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, clothing, aerosol cans, lampshades, etc.

3. Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.

4. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

Following are even more tips to help you enjoy burning candles safely.

Trim candlewicks to 1/4 inch each time before burning.

Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax. Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ceramic plates can be useful for this purpose.

Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, smoking, excessive dripping and errant flame. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire. Ceiling and other fans can cause drafts.

Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.

Do not burn a candle for longer than the manufacturer recommends.

Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.

Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains (1/2inch if in a container). This will also help prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.

Never touch or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.

Candles should be placed at least three inches apart from one another. This is to be sure they don’t melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.

One of the safest ways to extinguish a candle is to use a candle snuffer, which helps prevent hot wax from spattering.

Do not extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to spatter and can cause glass containers to break.

Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are much safer light sources than candles during a power failure.

Never use a candle as light when you go into a closet to look for things.

Never use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as a lantern or kerosene heater.

Burn Tip: Did you know candle wax possesses a kind of 'memory'. From the first time the candle burns and the wax becomes liquid, the wax will tend to repeat this melt pattern each time the candle is lit. Improper burning can lead to puddling in the center while leaving unsightly ridges along the edges of the container.  Therefore, in order to help ensure even burning in a container candle, safely allow the melt pool to expand evenly across the candle surface before extinguishing it. (Keeping your candle out of a draft or breeze, will help ensure even melting across the surface.) This method will help your candle burn more evenly across the surface the next time it is lit.

Burn Tip
: Burnt wicks can develop a kind of 'mushroom' flare on the tip end. To help ensure a cleaner burning candle, keep wick freshly trimmed (after extinguishing the flame, of course).

Burn Tip: Once melted, Soywax tends toward an irregular surface, producing small bumps and formations and even a white patina. This is quite natural and doesn't indicate a defect, nor does it affect the quality of your candle in any way.
